Multispectral detection of organic residues on poultry processing plant equipment based on hyperspectral reflectance imaging technique

چکیده
Diluted organic residues, such as feces, ingesta and other biological substances on poultry processing plant equipment surfaces, not easily discernible by human eye, are potential contamination sources for poultry carcasses. Development of sensitive detection methods for diluted organic residues is essential to ensure safe production of poultry carcasses. Hyperspectral imaging techniques have shown good potential for detecting the presence of fecal and other biological contaminants on food and processing equipment surfaces. In this study, the use of high spatial resolution hyperspectral reflectance is presented as a tool for selecting a few multispectral bands to detect diluted organic residues on the surface of materials used for manufacturing processing equipment. Reflectance imaging methods were explored for use in the detection of a range of diluted organic residues for both wet and dry conditions. Results showed that low concentrations of wet and dry residues, diluted up to 1:100 by weight with double distilled water, could be differentiated from stainless steel background with accuracies of 94.0 and 99.7%, respectively. Spectral bands determined in this study could be used for developing a multispectral inspection system for sanitation monitoring of poultry processing plants. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Uses of Hyperspectral and Multispectral Laser Induced Fluorescence Imaging Techniques for Food Safety Inspection
Spectral imaging including machine vision and multispectral imaging can provide a rapid, nondestructive means to assess agricultural commodities for their quality and safety for human consumption. These nondestructive techniques generally rely on reflectance measurements; the most commonly used spectral regions range through the visible (Vis) to the near infrared (NIR). Another optical sensing ...

A hyperspectral-multispectral line-scan imaging system was developed for differentiation of wholesome and systemically diseased chickens. In-plant testing was conducted for chickens on a commercial evisceration line moving at a speed of 70 birds per minute. Hyperspectral image data was acquired for a calibration data set of 543 wholesome and 64 systemically diseased birds and for a testing data...
متن کاملImproving the RX Anomaly Detection Algorithm for Hyperspectral Images using FFT
Anomaly Detection (AD) has recently become an important application of target detection in hyperspectral images. The Reed-Xialoi (RX) is the most widely used AD algorithm that suffers from “small sample size” problem. The best solution for this problem is to use Dimensionality Reduction (DR) techniques as a pre-processing step for RX detector. Using this method not only improves the detection p...
متن کاملEarly Detection of Douglas-Fir Beetle Infestation with Subcanopy Resolution Hyperspectral Imagery
Early detection of insect or pathogen infestations in forests would be useful to forest managers who want to make decisions that minimize timber losses. Typical methods of forest reconnaissance to detect infestations have included analysis of multispectral imagery. Multispectral imagery, however, often lacks the sensitivity to detect subtle changes in tree canopy reflectance because of physiolo...
متن کاملMultispectral Detection of Fecal Contamination on Apples Based on Hyperspectral Imagery: Part I. Application of Visible and Near–infrared Reflectance Imaging
Fecal contamination of apples is an important food safety issue. To develop automated methods to detect such contamination, a recently developed hyperspectral imaging system with a range of 450 to 851 nm was used to examine reflectance images of experimentally contaminated apples. Fresh feces from dairy cows were applied simultaneously as a thick patch and as a thin, transparent (not readily vi...
